Frequently Asked Questions

Multi-dimensional terrace with various materials in downtown Toronto.

Here are a few of the questions we are often asked.  If you have others, please don't be shy and just ask away!  We want all our customers to be fully informed and know all their options before ordering their beautiful balcony flooring and other additions.

Our focus is mostly on small to medium sized balconies (up to 500 sq. ft.).  We use a variety of materials (e.g. wood, stone, composite, grass) as well as providing furniture and lighting from our design teams.

Our materials are as environmentally sensitive as possible.  All wood comes from FSC sources, our composite is 100% recycled plastic and rice hulls (really!) combined to make the sturdiest composite we can find.  We buy from Canadian companies and artisans as much as humanly possible :-).

Finally, we are fully insured and all staff receive much higher than normal compensation and bonuses based on customer satisfaction.

Q?

How much do the decks cost?

A.

Our installed prices change slightly each year due to the changes in our dollar but our custom wood decking ranges from $12 to $19 per square foot depending on the material you pick.  We are currently adding a new range of wooden tiles (cedar and micro-pro sienna) which will have a lower price range but still all the great quality you expect.

Q?

Will my terrace be completely custom designed?

A.

Yes.  To ensure that the terrace is exactly what you want and fits your balcony perfectly, all our terraces are custom designed and then built off site and installed in one day at your place.  Our new line of wooden tiles are also custom built to fit your balcony perfectly.

Q?

Why don’t I do this myself with those wooden tile systems?

A.

You can.  You would then have a wooden tile balcony that would be about half the cost (without your labour thrown in).  The difference between those cheaper tile systems with the plastic backing and are decks are the following:

  • Our decks (tiles or full custom) are built to fit your balcony with no gaps or spaces between railings, etc.
  • You can pick the colour of the stain you want with our balconies and the pattern.
  • Our wood is real decking wood, not thin and will last a long, long time.
  • We cover up all bolts and ugly stuff as much as possible to give you a full, beautiful deck.

Q?

Will there be much dust and noise involved?

A.

Zero actually.  Once our designer has developed the concept for you and you've signed off, we build the entire terrace off site.  On a day of your choice, our crew installs the terrace using our in-house, modular, building approach.  It only takes a few hours and there is absolutely no clean up or disturbance of your living space.

Q?

Do I need a building permit for my new terrace?

A.

No you don't.  The terraces we install are considered no different than you putting down a carpet.  We don't attach the terrace structure to anything except itself which corresponds to all condominium and apartment guidelines.

Q?

How durable, weather and rot resistant is the wood?

A.

All our thermal woods are expected to last a minimum of 25+ years, primarily due to the thermal heating process that they go through.  Along with being very durable and extremely resistance to denting or wear, they also show strong resistance to both brown-rot and white-rot fungi. The wood has excellent weathering possibilities, rated 25 years against decay and insect damage with applications having longevity of over 50 years. Class A fire resistance rating as well, which is the same as concrete and steel.

We also use composites that last equally as long.  In many cases we use good old cedar, which is cheaper and lasts a long time as well due to its natural rot and insect resistance.

Q?

Are there any fire issues (e.g. cigarettes) with the materials?

A.

No, none at all.  We use extremely hard woods which are the most stable of all durable timbers.  They have a fire rating of Class A, which is the same as concrete or steel.  Of course, our stone is all granite, etc. which never burns of course!

Q?

How about weight and wind issues?

A.

The maximum weight of our terraces is 17 lbs. per square foot.  Less than your dog and a lot less than you and your friends having a good time out there!  The terraces can not lift off because while they are relatively light, each large module is fastened to each other during installation.  Wind can not get underneath the terrace as it lies flat on the ground.

Q?

Are the lighting options expensive?

A.

Not at all.  We use low voltage, LED, lighting products that not only are extremely safe and use almost no power, they will last more or less forever.  Many customers like to have them on the step-up as well, for safety reasons and ease of walking.

Q?

Water and ice issues?

A.

All our terraces have a specially designed underlay which drains off all water and stops any ice buildup.  This is also important for what they call the "freeze/thaw" impact on the balcony and our terraces not only impede that, they protect your balcony in the long run.  Every condo building should make it mandatory to have coverings for their balconies - it would save the owners a lot of money!

Q?

Will I need to maintain the terrace in any way?

A.

Maintenance really depends on your own taste.  The woods and stone will last forever but some people prefer to oil or clean them every few years to retain their colours.  Others prefer to allow them to fade or "silver" over time, which is also quite gorgeous.  We can advise and if you like, can even do the maintenance and restoration.

Q?

Can I dismantle the terrace if I move?

A.

Absolutely.  The terrace is fixed to itself and can be easily broken apart if you wish.  No different than any piece of furniture.

Q?

How long will it last?

A.

A long, long, time!  We use specialty hardwoods and composites for the decking and their normal lifespan is 50+ years.  Of course our cedar decks do not last as long but will probably be in great shape when you leave!  Our stone will last much longer than your building :-).  Even our lighting is LED so while it can be replaced if necessary, it will be lighting your terrace for thousands of hours.
