Terrace Creations was at the 2019 Canada Blooms show, where we were asked to demonstrate a modern Toronto condo balcony. As usual, we took a different spin on it by using a number of different components to create what we called "Bike Storage to Beaujolais". The emphasis this year was on creating a balcony which a modern Toronto condo owner would be proud of - complete with state of the art marijuana planters!

Our balcony display incorporated some terrific faux grass from our favourite supplier - Design Turf from Toronto. That's one of their newer grass lines on our back wall.

Flooring was done by the best composite maker in Canada - Tru North Deck out of Brantford, Ontario. We used one of our favourite colours, Hazelwood, for the flooring.

Finally, our own Paul Cuthbert built two beautiful planters, designed for modern marijuana growing, complete with drainage systems. If you look closely, you will even see some cannabis look alikes all along the back wall :-).

Simple designs from Asia are easily incorporated into Toronto and can make even the smallest of balconies a beauty!

Asian Balcony Designs

We get a lot of our input and ideas from scrolling through google and looking at Asian balcony designs.  The reasons are simple.  In general, condos and apartments in various Asian countries are smaller than in Canada and they have to use every inch to their advantage.  Also, a higher sense of style in utilizing their balconies.  Finally, a much longer history of using this often overlooked piece of real estate!

This is a nice, simple design with wooden decking and a lovely green wall with planter.  A small water feature has been built in as well which is very popular in Asia.  The lighter wood stain makes the balcony look much bigger than it is and of course, using some plants and greenery turns it into a lovely oasis.

Decking with Planters and Grasses

A wonderful client who requested a total remake of her balcony with some privacy screens added to the mix.  They decided on amazon grey decking from TruNorth Composites (my favourite composite company) and we custom built three planters for the space as well.

Just after installation and before the grasses started to grow!

The planters were designed with an open space at the bottom to provide some storage.  The planters themselves were dressed up with birch branches and some Karl-Foerster grasses to provide some privacy from nearby condo buildings.

The customer was thrilled with the installation and had this to say:

A huge thank you to Tim for turning my balcony into an oasis.  The new flooring and planters are fantastic!  Throughout the process, Tim was detailed, punctual, organized, clean and the best of all, he puts a ton of effort and enthusiasm into his work.  Thank you for the amazing work Tim and I would not hesitate to recommend you.

This is a vision that I wouldn't mind seeing each day as I looked out my balcony doors.

Creating a condo balcony should be like any other room in your house.  Do it with some style and thought because you will be using it as much as any other room.  More importantly, you will be looking out to that area every day from your balcony doors and why not see something beautiful?

This balcony uses beautiful river stones, some grass and multiple decking surfaces to create a small oasis in the middle of the city.  Check out more designs and thoughts on our Pinterest site and get designing!
